Design and construction followed on from the universal and ubiquitous Mk1 family of coaching stock, with the prototype example built in 1963. Series production continued until 1975 at Derby Carriage Works. They were of steel construction, and of a more monocoque design than the Mk1, which added to their safety and integrity in event of collision or mishap.

As passenger expectations and railway operations had moved on since the vast Mk1 range was conceived, and because there was still much life left in the Mk1s by the mid-sixties, a much reduced number of vehicle types were built. The basic Mk2 types included First and Second class accommodation, with corridors and compartments only available to First Class passengers, all Second Class coaches were conceived as open saloons. First and Second class Brake coaches were built, but no full brakes, catering cars, restaurants, buffets or sleeping cars were included, Mark 1 coaches fulfilling these needs until Mark 3s came along in the late seventies.

The Mark 2 family underwent a number of tweaks and improvements during the 12 years construction period. The principal visual differences included air braking from Mk2A, removal of the central bodyside doors and vestibule (Mk2B), introduction of wrap-around corner doors and provision of one WC at each end in lieu of two at one end (Mk2B), air conditioning - so no opening windows in the saloon area (Mk2D), no side corridor First Class compartment vehicles (from Mk2E onwards), varying style and colours of end gangway doors.

Bachmann has produced early and late types of Mk2 vehicles, Mk2A with the characteristic early features of this widely-travelled type, and the final evolution of the Mk2, the Mk2F, including the popular Mk2F DBSO that was converted from the standard BSO for push-pull operation between Edinburgh and Glasgow in the late 1970s, with the dedicated Class 47/7 'shove duff' fleet, converted from members of Class 47/4. The Mk2Fs are available with DCC operated lighting, and the DBSO itself has DCC controlled cab and interior lighting. Bachmann also produces the Class 47 and Class 90 that have operated with the DBSO Mk2F.

Mk2s have carried a wide range of liveries including BR Blue & Grey, Inter-City, Swallow, Regional Railways, ScotRail, Virgin Trains, Anglia, Network SouthEast, Virgin CrossCountry, Arriva, and many current liveries with railtour and heritage operators including Locomotive Services Limited (LSL), West Coast Railway Company and more.

Mk2s have during their 50+ operating life formed many of the famous named trains including The Flying Scotsman, hauled by Class 55 Deltics, the Royal Scot, Caledonian, the Electric Scot, and many more. Regional Railways Class 37s were a long time favourite of enthusiasts, working with Mk2 coaching stock on rural routes especially in Scotland, Wales and more recently the Cumbrian Coast and Norfolk, and older enthusiasts will remember early Mk2s operating alongside steam in the North West during the well-liked and rich in modelling inspiration 'Transition Era' 1965-68.

The third generation of the Ford Transit was manufactured/assembled in several European countries between 1986 and 2003. Appearing in 1:76 scale the model is based on the vehicle which Land Rover produced at the Solihull plant between 1989 and 1998. Registered F981 ENV from 1998, ours is representative of the last year of manufacture.

In real life, the Discovery 1 followed some of the finer features of the Range Rover with the same chassis, suspension and 4 wheel drive system. It was designed, however, at a more affordable price point so it came with smaller engine sizes and initially a three door option. It was also the first Land Rover aimed at the daily driving family market whilst still maintaining the off road facility. In addition, it provided more luggage space and was the only model with a 4 cylinder petrol engine option as well as the diesel alternative. The Discovery 1 came with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox

Another innovative feature was the interior for which Land Rover engaged the help of the Conran Design Group. The result was a uniform interior colour scheme regardless of exterior paintwork, comprising a signature Sonar Blue to seats and carpet. The car also featured magazine holders above the windscreen, hand-holds for rear passengers built into the front seat head rests, new radio controls on the instrument cluster, two removable sunroof panels and a Land Rover branded cloth fabric holdall in the front centre console for storage. This unique ‘bag’ could be removed and with a detachable shoulder strap could be used as a fashion accessory. A collector’s item in itself!

The remainder of the interior and dashboard features of the Discovery 1 were taken from the existing Rover Group stable, including the instrument panel, digital clock, heater and air conditioning controls. A nod to nostalgia comprised the distinctive Morris Marina door handles.

Our 1:76 scale model incorporates all the fine visual features of the original. Additional interior features include black floor mats, grey interior door handles, gearstick and hand brake.

The exterior bodywork is a metallic red colour scheme with black and silver trim. It had been enhanced to look less utilitarian than its predecessor, the Series I, both inside and out. The extended rear provided more cargo space and the interior seating was now all forward facing. The Discovery Series II was the last Land Rover product to use an evolution of the original 1970 Range Rover underpinnings with its extended 185” long body sitting on a short 100” wheelbase. The series was classed as a 5-door estate and it came with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed automatic transmission. Engine size options comprised the 4.0L Rover V8 (petrol), 4.6L Rover V8 (petrol or the 2.5L Td5 15 (diesel) which is the subject of our model. The Td5 in-line direct-injected straight-five engine was an electronically managed engine proving smoother at lower revs than its predecessors, having been developed by Land Rover from the Rover L series car engine.

The Oxford model is registered GK54 PWZ from the very last months of production in 2004, before being superseded by the Series 3. From 2002, some ‘facelift’ features had been introduced including newly styled headlamps, newly designed brake lights on the rear, as well as indicators being moved higher up the vehicle from their previous bumper position. Our new model incorporates the physical features of the real thing. Smartly decorated in a deep metallic green, the interior and exterior trim is finished almost completely in black. These 1,700hp Types 3 diesel-electric locomotives were built at English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry and by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns between 1960 and 1965, with 309 examples produced in total. When TOPS was implemented the type was designated Class 37.

The class proved popular with railwaymen and so in 1985, a major refurbishment programme for the Class 37 locomotives was sanctioned to extend the working lives of 135 locomotives. Features of the refurbishment involved plating over the four-character head codes and sealing off the nose end communication doors. Dedicated freight locomotives received lower gearing to increase the tractive effort, and some were fitted with extra ballast or even more powerful engines. A new subclass was created for locomotives refurbished with Electric Train Heating (ETH) equipment, allowing their use on passenger trains the whole year-round.

With the sectorisation of British Rail taking hold in the early-1980s, the locomotives returned to traffic following refurbishment in a wide and diverse range of liveries. Passenger machines appeared in BR Blue Large Logo, InterCity and Regional Railways schemes to name just three, whilst freight engines received numerous varieties of Railfreight livery, Transrail, Mainline and Loadhaul. The Class continued to be widely used into the Privatisation-era, with examples operating for the likes of EWS, DRS, West Coast Railways and Colas, whilst others have received ‘retro’ heritage repaints

The British Rail Class 37 is a favourite among enthusiasts and modellers alike and, having been a firm fixture in the Bachmann Branchline OO scale range for many years, in 2022 an all-new model of this iconic locomotive was launched.

The Class continued to be widely used into the Privatisation-era, with examples operating for the likes of EWS, DRS, West Coast Railways and Colas, whilst others have received ‘retro’ heritage repaints.

Our second model of the Maestro makes its entrance in a biscuit beige registered LVL 618Y from 1982, launched officially in 1983 to favourable acclaim from the motoring media.

Introduced as a small family 5-door hatchback, the Maestro superseded both the Austin Maxi and the Allegro at the Morris Cowley plant of British Leyland. It had a 5-speed manual gearbox and our model represents the top of the range 1.6L engined car.

The Class continued to be widely used into the Privatisation-era, with examples operating for the likes of EWS, DRS, West Coast Railways and Colas, whilst others have received ‘retro’ heritage repaints.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0645/5292/7467/files/35-338_34b7df2c-fec5-4ae3-aa06-3425e5881f94.jpg?v=1693943099
oxford-diecast-76sdv003-rover-sd1-3500-vitesse-moonraker-blue
Oxford Diecast 76SDV003 - Rover SD1 3500 Vitesse Moonraker Blue

1:76 scale Rover SD1 3500 Vitesse from the 1970s-80s, .Its racy lines and high performance made it very popular amongst image conscious young motorists, as well as the Police! English Electric adapted an existing design based on an export model for a 1,000bhp diesel and 20 were built as a pilot scheme for assessment.

The first batch was built in 1957 and the diesels were assigned to work from Devon's Road depot, East London. The design was a success from the start and by 1962 a total of 127 had been built. Following assessment of all the Type 1 diesels, BRB placed a further order increasing the total to 228 by 1968 and the design became the BR standard for 1,000bhp diesel locomotives. With the introduction of TOPS the locomotives were designated Class 20 and renumbered 20001 to 20228. The locomotives were principally designed for freight work but also saw service on summer passenger trains where train heating was not required. The Class 20s worked over the Eastern, London Midland and Scottish regions as well as into Wales and were commonly associated with coal traffic. The only drawback the Class had was its single end cab, unlike modern designs that have a cab at each end. BR resolved this problem by regularly operating the Class 20s as pairs, nose to nose, and with the combined power of 2,000bhp they were able to haul the heavier block freight trains.

BR's decision to switch to Type 5 and in particular Class 60 diesels in the late 1980s started a gradual withdrawal of the fleet, with just 28 left by 1994. A tribute to the design is that after 45 years the Class is still in service with DRS on mainline duties following refurbishment, the resulting locomotives being designated Class 20/3s.

At least 28 of the class are now preserved.

WC (“Took”) is a 1972 Invacar Model 70 – the final flowering of the remarkable invalid carriage series of vehicles, produced after the Second World War until 1977.

This 1:76 scale model is based on the Model 70 which was produced by both AC and Invacar Ltd as the government wished to reduce the number of different invalid carriages that were available during the 1960s. This means a simple ‘twist and go’ driving experience – you push down on the handlebars to stop, though different driving controls, including steering wheels or tillers, could be specified to suit the disability of the driver.

Safety concerns led to invalid carriages being replaced by the Motability scheme in 1977, which offered normal cars with hand controls instead, but such was the outcry at the time that those who already had invalid carriages were allowed to keep them – until 2003! At that point, the scheme finally came to an end and the government ordered all of the invalid carriages that it owned to be scrapped.

TWC survived, because scrapyards soon got fed up with the deluge of invalid carriages, and so TWC and a group of friends, were abandoned in a field in Sussex, where they were forgotten for some 14 years. In November 2017, Ian Seabrook of the HubNut YouTube Channel rescued TWC and set about getting this extraordinary piece of motoring history back on the road, having long been fascinated by these unusual machines. Since returning to the road in March 2018, TWC has travelled from Wales back to the Invacar Ltd factory (no longer trading, but the gentleman now running a garage in the building served his apprenticeship at the factory and looked after them for many years) in Essex, has driven through the centre of London, been around the Goodwood Motor Circuit and also slowly climbed up the famous Shelsley Walsh hillclimb.
